Korean Drumming for Level 2 Beginners

Join renowned artist Dohee Lee in continuing your exploration of the world of traditional Korean Drumming! This 5-week series will focus on "P'ungmul and Samulnori styles, both of which are rooted in ancient village farming culture and shamanic rituals. Samulnori literally means "four things playing" and refers to the four primary percussion instruments played in its performance: kkwenggwari, jin, janggu and buk.

This class picks up from the Fall 2012 Beginning Level 1 class with Adria Otte so it assumes some rudimentary knowledge of the janggu. Based on the range of experience of those interested in the class, adjustments may be made to compliment all of the students' current levels.

Since her arrival in the US, musician/dancer/performance artist Dohee Lee has been a vital contributor to both the traditional and contemporary arts landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Born on Jeju Island, a volcanic island off the southern coast of Korea known for its strong shamanic tradition and matriarchal culture, Lee studied Korean dance, percussion and voice at a master level. Her work integrates these traditional roots with contemporary and experimental performance forms, and layers stories, myths, politics and spirituality into multidisciplinary performance pieces that combine music, movement, visuals, costumes, installation and audience participation. A commitment to teaching is also encompassed in her artistic vision. Lee acted as artistic director and instructor at the Korean Youth Cultural Center from 2002 to 2008, resident artist and instructor at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center from 2008 to 2011, and has been a guest instructor at San Francisco State University, Saint Mary’s College, UC Berkeley and Northern Illinois University.
